It is necessary to provide a diagnostic code when filing health insurance for payment of counseling sessions.
However, the client’s clinical record and the content of the counseling sessions remain strictly confidential and will be disclosed to a third party only with written permission of the client or his or her parent or guardian with the following exceptions:
- It is determined the client is a danger to him/herself or others, including child or elder abuse.
- Counselor is ordered by a court to disclose information.
- Counselor may discuss cases with colleagues for purposes of consultation or supervision, eliminating identifying information.
If the client is a minor, parents or guardians will be informed of procedures used and given appropriate feedback as to the child’s progress in therapy.
